Esperanza Ona (Partido Popular) resigns as Mayor of Fuengirola and will devote himself exclusively to his post in the Andalusia regional parliament.
Ona puts an end to nearly 20 straight years as Mayor of Fuengirola. She announced on October 20 its decision, in the company of the President of Malaga province Elias Bendodo and her upcoming successor, Ana Mula.
It had been speculated about Oñas resignation after a reform of the electoral law that prohibits mayors to also hold an entry in the regional parliament. Recently approved the Spanish Constitutional Court to reform the electoral law, which means that it is inconsistent to be mayor while sitting with the regional government of Andalusia.
In the current situation Esperanza Oña Second Vice President of the Andalusian Parliament, and she says that the main priority right now is at the regional level. She says the decision to resign as mayor is the hardest thing she ever made, adding that she is proud of the achievements in Fuengirola in recent years. She mentions in particular order and a sanitized economy, an unemployment rate of 14 percent (against 24.5 per cent at the national level) and the total absence of corruption scandals.
